We have to talk about Anti-Palestinian Racism

What is Anti-Palestinian Racism (APR)?

“Anti-Palestinian Racism is adjacent to Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism, but specifically aims to silence, erase, dehumanize and defame Palestinians and their allies who publicly advocate for Palestinian human rights.”

In 2024, I created Anti-PalestinianRacism.com, a resource that hopes to educate and illuminate for audiences the many ways APR manifests and harms us. Please take the time to look through the examples shared there, as they are intended to be an accessible and a helpful first resource for learners and leaders wanting to learn more about APR.

Basic APR Workshop Structure

  • Part 1: Foundations and Connections

An introduction to the workshop, setting shared goals and boundaries for the session, taking a moment to outline the political frameworks that shape antiracist work, intersectionality, decolonization, anti-oppression, etc

  • Part 2: Palestinian identities

Taking a moment to acknowledge the diversity of Palestinian identities (religious, racial, geographic, political, gender, sexual, etc.) and the richness of Palestinian cultural traditions, music, art, food, clothing, and more

  • Part 3: Understanding how APR works

Defining Anti-Palestinian Racism and explaining how it is normalized, outlining its intersections with other systemic oppressions, and the ways it manifests, including dehumanization, denial, cultural appropriation, violence, and more

  • Part 4: Identifying and Addressing APR

Learning how to identify and unpack various racist tropes about Palestinians, pointing to contemporary examples in media, government, culture, and corporations, and how to address APR effectively in your circles and community

  • Part 5: Questions and Conversation

Every workshop includes interactive elements and tries to leave as much time for guided conversation and questions and answers, as this part of the workshop can often create generative and transformative moments
